Explore Being an AccountantHacktax

Stuart Hack, Owner of Hack Tax and Accounting Services LLC

Briefly describe your job.

I provide Tax and Accounting Services for Individuals and Small Businesses.

How long have you been working in this field?

Since 1987

When and how did you decide to choose this career?

As a child (and still) I was a big sports fan. Once I figured out I wasn't going to play in the Major Leagues, I wanted to become the Statistician for the New York Mets. I have always loved numbers.

What education/training did you obtain to qualify you for your field?

I have a bachelors in Mathematics and a Masters in Accounting

What was your first job in the field?

I worked as an accountant for a Municipal Bond firm on Wall Street. I was actually there the day of the 1987 crash. I'll never forget walking outside during lunch.

Describe a typical day on the job?

During Tax Season I could be meeting with clients, preparing and putting together tax returns for filing. The rest of the year I do a variety of things from Writeup work (tracking income/expenses on Quickbooks) to finishing returns that were extended. Since my business is new I am also networking.

What do you like most about what you do?

I like meeting people. Everyone is different and it makes it interesting.

What do you like least about your job?

When I have to tell someone they owe a lot of money.

What has been the most rewarding experience so far in your career?

Finally taking the plunge to go off on my own.

What is the biggest challenge for you in this job?

Getting new clients and businesses.

What are the most important personal and professional skills necessary to succeed in your field?

Honesty, Integrity, detail and deadline oriented.

What could someone do to learn more about this field right now?

Take classes. I think now a days a Masters Degree is important. Also if you could get an internship with a firm that would be helpful.

What advice would you offer to students making a career choice or on work life itself?

Ask questions to anyone that has anything to do with the field you're looking at.  Don't feel your question is too stupid or embarrassing.
