Explore Being an Attorney - Employment

Raquel Fas Bravo

Briefly describe your job.

I am a labor and employment attorney. I represent employees and/or job applicants who have been discriminated, harassed, and/or retaliated based on a protected category (race, national origin, sex (including pregnancy), religion, age, disability, among others). I also represent employees in wage and hour claims.

How long have you been working in this field?

I have been a labor and employment attorney since 2003 and I have worked in the labor and employment law field since 2001.

When and how did you decide to choose this career?

I decided I wanted to practice labor and employment law when I worked as a law clerk in the labor and employment department of a law firm while I was still a law student.

What education/training did you obtain to qualify you for your field?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with a minor in Psychology (cum laude). I am also a licensed Medical Technologist (summa cum laude). Finally, I graduated from law school summa cum laude in 2003.

What was your first job in the field?

Before becoming a labor and employment attorney, during law school, I worked as a summer associate and later as a law clerk at a law firm were I started my career in labor and employment law.

Describe a typical day on the job?

A typical day on the job for me usually includes legal research, reading, and writing. Some of my days also include meeting prospective and/or current clients. There are also days when I have to attend mediations, depositions, hearings, etc.

What do you like most about what you do?

My favorite part of my job is meeting new people and helping them move on with their lives. I also love to teach and participate as a speaker at trainings and/or seminars.

What do you like least about your job?

What I like the least about my job is when people try to take advantage of me and/or of my clients. Also, I don’t like the part of the litigation process when the case becomes very contentious and the parties start taking things personally.

What has been the most rewarding experience so far in your career?

The most rewarding experience of my career has been starting my solo law practice and becoming an adjunct professor.

What is the biggest challenge for you in this job?

As a Plaintiff’s attorney the biggest challenge is dealing with limited resources in comparison with the attorneys for the Defendant.

What advice would you give someone who was interested in running a business?

To never let fear stop them from pursuing their dreams. Also, to be patient and surround themselves with the best people.

What are the most important personal and professional skills necessary to succeed in your field?

As a Plaintiff’s attorney, it is important to be humble and honest. You also need to enjoy reading and writing.

As an adjunct professor, you need to enjoy teaching and learning from others.

For both careers, you can’t be afraid of speaking in public.

What could someone do to learn more about this field right now?

To learn about labor and employment law, you can visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s website or the Department of Labor’s website. You can also attend a labor and employment law seminar in your area.

What advice you would offer to students making a career choice or on work life itself?

The most important advice I can give to a student is to choose a career on something they love because work should be enjoyable. I also deeply believe in work/life balance and in always putting yourself first.
