cz: Briefly describe your job.

I am a professional aviator (pilot). I fly a corporate jet for a large company in south Florida.

cz: How long have you been working in this field?

I have been in this field for over 25 years and I have been at my present job for the past 15 years. Previously I was a flight instructor and flew for both commercial and charter companies.

cz: When and how did you decide to choose this career?

As a youngster I was always interested in technology and aviation.

cz: What education and training did you receive before entering your field?

I hold college degrees in both aviation and communications from Ohio University. I have extensive training and type ratings in several different aircraft: Challenger 601, Challenger 604, Boeing 737, BAC 1-11 and Learjets.

cz: How did you begin OR What was your first job in the field?

I began as a flight instructor at Ohio University while attending college.

cz: Describe a typical day on the job?

There is no real “typical” day. We may fly to one city on a given day or fly to several cities. The trip could be one in the continental U.S. or we may be flying overseas. Therefore, you may be away for one day or for a week.

cz: What do you like most about what you do?

It is a very challenging job and every trip is different from the previous one.

cz: What has been the most rewarding experience so far in your career?

Obviously this job involves extensive traveling that allows me to see the world. It is very interesting to see other cultures and how their lives are different from ours.

cz: What do you like least about your job?

I am on call seven days a week and it is very hard to plan ahead. At times I am away from home for holidays and special occasions.

cz: What is the biggest challenge for you in this job?

This job demands continuous self-study and recurrent testing as well as maintaining a medical license each year.

cz: What would you like to say to someone considering this career?

This is a career that you must be dedicated to. It requires constant testing and continual education. It can be very rewarding and very challenging. The aviation industry will continue to expand, particularly for businesses and corporations.

cz: What are the most important personal and professional skills necessary to succeed in your field?

You must be very interested in technical matters and you must be very flexible.

cz: What would a person interested in entering this field have to do to get a good job in it?

You must have a degree in aviation and/or the minimum of at least a commercial pilot’s license.

cz: What could someone who is interested in this field do to learn more about it right now?

There are many different websites/publications with this information. Such websites would be AOPA.com and publications like Flying magazine.

cz: Is there any general advice you would like to offer to students on making a career choice or on work life itself?

Make sure you choose a career that will enable you to enjoy going to work.
