Explore Being a Real Estate Agent with Susan Tamaccio

realestate-agent-homecz: Briefly describe your job.

The main purpose of my job is to assist people with their real estate needs. These can include purchasing, selling or leasing properties. There are many different tasks that must be done in order to accomplish these goals. Some of the basic tasks are: searching MLS (Multiple Listing Services) and tax rolls, setting up appointments, showing properties, developing Comparative Market Analyses and listing presentations, coordinating with Mortgage individuals, and marketing listings.

cz: How long have you been working in this field?

I got my real estate license in 1994.

cz: When and how did you decide to choose this career?

I initially got my license "just to have it". When my children were small, I utilized the license to assist friends but did not work at being a realtor as a career. As my children got older and I had more time, I began to work at it as a full time job.

cz: What education/training did you obtain to qualify you for your field?

I attended a real estate school in order to prepare for the state test. Once you pass the state test, you have a license

cz: What was your first job in the field?

I hung my license with a local real estate firm and began to learn. Once you have a license, there is still a lot of information to learn in order to actually "do" the job.

cz: Describe a typical day on the job?

Each day is different and may be composed of any of the following: Checking and responding to e-mail, setting up appointments to show property, searching MLS and sending properties to customers, going on listing appointments, responding to and returning many calls (other realtors, customers, mortgage brokers, banks, inspectors, appraisers, etc...), developing marketing materials, prospecting, and taking pictures. Sometimes it's finding a painter to do some work before a home is listed or locating a roofer to come out and do repair. The list of possibilities goes on and on.

cz: What do you like most about what you do?

I love the flexibility and the variety. There is also great satisfaction in helping someone find a place to live or sell a home so they can move on.

cz: What do you like least about your job?

It can be difficult when I have done everything that I can, but a deal falls apart due to something beyond my control.

cz: What has been the most rewarding experience so far in your career?

Seeing people move into a home that they love and will enjoy for many years never gets old.

cz: What is the biggest challenge for you in this job?

Managing the day to day tasks of current business while making sure to continue to prospect for new business can be tricky.

cz: What are the most important personal and professional skills necessary to succeed in your field?

Honest, accurate and effective communication is essential. Even small miscommunications in this field can lead to big problems. Attention to detail is also incredibly important. From verifying square footage to knowing if a Homeowner's Association will allow a fence to be installed. All of the details matter and should be verified by reliable sources.

cz: What could someone do to learn more about this field right now?

Talk with realtors or spend time with one in order to get a first-hand view of the day to day elements of the job.

cz: What advice you would offer to students making a career choice or on work life itself?

Do as much research as possible on any potential career choice, interview people who actually make a living at that career and know yourself! Even if a job seems wonderful, if it does not work with your personality and talents, it might not be the best for you.
