Small business agency launches training for returning vets to start business

Marcia Heroux Pounds • Sun Sentinel • July 13, 2012

SunSentinal-SThe U.S. Small Business Administration has joined with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense to launch a training program for transitioning service members and veterans to help them become entrepreneurs and create jobs.

"Operations Boots to Business" is a national initiative that will be piloted with theU.S. Marine Corps., said the SBA, which announced the program on Thursday.

Nine percent of small businesses are veteran-owned. These 2.45 million businesses employ more than 5 million people, according to the SBA.

“We know that veterans make good business owners because of their discipline and ability to execute on a mission that they develop during their training in the Armed Services.  SBA is committed to partnering with veterans to ensure their success in business,” said SBA South Florida District Director Francisco “Pancho” Marrero.

For more information, veterans should contact Robert Chavarria, the veteran business opportunity representative in South Florida. He can be reached at Robert.Chavarria@sba.gov.
